Omar Hamaha, Military Commander of Jamaat Ansar Al-Din, which established control over several cities in Mali, including Timbuktu (see map), made the following statement recorded on April 2-3:
“Our war is Jihad, and it’s a legitimate war under Islam. We are against rebel movements and secessions. We are against all revolutions that are not carried out in the name of Islam. We came to practice the rituals of Islam under the name of Allah. What we want is not Azawad but Islam. Independence is Islam.
It is the real independence. It is practicing the Sharia from dawn to sun set. It’s is not Arab or Touareg, or black or white. It is in the name of Islam”, Emir Omar says as quoted by Ansar Forum.
On the other hand, a spokesman for Ansar Al-Din said that the Mujahideen had released 315 captives from the Malian puppet army, including the “governor” of Kidal and his deputy, and 7 colonels.
The spokesman added that the Mujahideen decided to grant amnesty for prisoners who were captured during their attack on the town of
Kidal last Friday.
